After getting a good night’s rest, among some other things, and not having to worry about being attacked, Bridge and Nicole woke up early, ready to get the day started. Once they finished eating breakfast, they got themselves ready to go. But before they left their new hotel, Bridge’s phone rang. He looked at the ID and saw it was Happ. He groaned.

“Oh, boy.” Bridge answered. “Hey Happy. What’s shaking, bro?”

“Don’t call me bro. And I think you know what’s shaking.”

“I do?”

“Don’t give me the innocent routine.”

“About what, Wally?”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“You start rambling, saying nonsensical things, trying to get people off the subjects that you don’t want to talk about.”

“I do no such thing. Hey, how are the Yankees playing lately?”

“There you go. Stop that.”

“OK. Well, thanks for calling. It was great catching up with you. I’ve gotta go.”

“No you don’t. Don’t do that.”

“I’m really kind of pressed for time here. It was a good chat, though.”

“Luke, I got word that there was some kind of explosion last night in Argentina. You happen to know anything about that?”

“I do not. Wasn’t us? And how’d you hear about that so fast?”

“Word travels.”

“It sure does. But it wasn’t us.”

“Luke? I heard there were a bunch of bodies.”

“In one piece?”

“What did I tell you guys?”

“Look, can I help it if rival gangs are shooting it out at each other the moment we get here? Just a coincidence.”

“Can you please operate more quietly?” Happ asked.

“If I answer yes, that would be admitting guilt. And I don’t believe you have any concrete evidence to link us to that.”

“I don’t need concrete evidence to know it.”

“Eric, I give you my word that we will be as quiet as a mouse the rest of our trip here. No one will even know we’re here.”

“Uh huh. Anyway, I just wanted to call and remind you.”

“Well I really appreciate it. Gotta go.”

Bridge hung up and wiped his forehead.

“Who was that?” Nicole asked, walking into the room.

“Eric. Wanted to make sure we weren’t behind the explosion yesterday.”

“He got word fast!”

“Tell me about it. I assure him it wasn’t us.”

“And he believed it?”

“Not for a second. But, no harm, no foul. And no evidence either. So we’re good.”

“Nice. Let’s get out of here and find Vallejo.”

Before they could get out the door, Bridge’s phone rang again.

“Someone’s popular today,” Nicole said.

Bridge looked at the ID. It wasn’t a familiar number.

“Wonder who this is?”

“Answer and find out.”

“Usually when you do that, you wish you hadn’t,” Bridge said. “You’re unhappy that you found out.”

Nicole rolled her eyes. “Just answer the phone.”

Bridge sighed. “Fine. But just remember, you asked for it. Whatever happens out of this, it’s your fault.”

“Just answer the phone.”

“It’s also an anonymous ID, and those never turn out to be good.”

“Just answer!”

“OK, OK, don’t lose your pants over it.” Bridge then answered. “Hello?”

“Mr. Bridge. Thank you for taking my call.”

“Who’s this?”

“Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten about me already. After our little chat?”

“Benicio. How’s it hanging?”

“It could be better.”

“Oh. So sorry to hear that.
